Probation for Teacher Guilty of Statutory Rape

Posted on January 27th, 2011 No Comments

A Massachusetts teacher convicted of having sex with an underage student was sentenced to 5-years probation Wednesday morning.

According to court documents, former Holyoke teacher Lisa Lovie received no jail time for her crime. The 25 year-old teacher admitted to having sex with a 15 year-old male student from a local high school back in February 2009. She was charged with three counts of statutory rape and one count of enticing a child under the age of 16. The FBI found the Lovie and the student in a motel room in West Virginia.

Lovie’s sister, Shirley Campbell, said her sibling “crossed a boundary that can’t be crossed. She’s lost her career. She’s lost her license to teach, but she’s got a future ahead and I think she’ll do very well for herself.”

The trial judge said he did not believe Lovie was a sexual predator and said she is unlikely to re-offend. Instead of siding with the prosecution’s request of three to five years in prison, the judge sided with the defense.

Defense attorney David Hoose said of Lovie, “her attitude all along was: ‘I’m responsible for this. I did this. I’m the adult, and I’m not going to do anything that is going to make this more difficult.”
