A convicted sex offender who removed a GPS ankle monitor he was ordered to wear was arrested Wednesday in Los Angeles.

According to officials with the Department of Public Social Services, 44 year-old Michael S. Butler was arrested shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday by a security officer for the department. The officer recognized Butler from a wanted poster distributed by the U.S. Marshals Service, which had focused a search for Butler on a three-mile radius area of downtown Los Angles.

Butler was walking through a metal detector at the office when the security officer recognized him and alerted nearby deputies, who stopped Butler as he tried to run out the door.

Butler was considered an armed and dangerous fugitive.
