What are the requirements for the proper storage of firearms?

In the state of Massachusetts, it is illegal to keep a firearm in any location unless the weapon is properly secured against unauthorized use. The law establishes the proper storage requirements as a locked container such as a safe or gun case, or a tamper-resistant mechanical locking device attached the gun which is properly engaged to make the weapon inoperable. Penalties for violating this statute can involve up to a year in prison, with a minimum of one year if the firearm is also not properly licensed.
