A national study done on the number of domestic violence cases in the nation shows that the number of incidents is directly related to the slow economy.

The study surveyed 700 different law enforcement agencies and 56 percent of them stated that they saw a correlation between the number of domestic violence cases and the down economy.

This number increased from 40 percent of agencies when a similar study was done in 2010. Police officials stated that the number of domestic violence cases increased when the economy is slow because the high unemployment rate leads to financial issues and increased stress within the home.

In New Jersey, police stated they have received 10 percent more domestic violence cases this year than in 2010. Simple and aggravated assaults are also up. The FBI, stated that although overall crime is down, domestic violence cases are not tracked separately. Local police officials stated that the number of domestic violence calls are up even though the charges are not always filed in these cases.

If you or a loved one has been charged with a serious crime, you need representation on your side that may be able to help you receive the representation that you deserve.

A Rhode Island man is now in court for a sexual assault case that occurred in Providence in 2007.

According to state officials, the case revolves around a 16-year-old girl who was walking home from a party when she was picked up by a man and taken to an empty parking lot where she was sexually assaulted while the man held a knife to her.

Right after the attack occurred, the girl was taken to the hospital where DNA samples were taken in a rape kit. It was not until recently, when a bank robbery occurred, that police officials found a match to the samples.

A 31-year-old man plead no contest to the robbery case and he had to submit DNA samples as a result. Nearly two months later, they were matched to the 2007 assault. Before the DNA samples came in, there was not much other evidence that was helpful in the case.

In a 5-to-4 vote on Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that strip-searches will now be allowed to be done on detainees after an arrest of any kind even if there is no suspicion that they have contraband on them.

A justice in the majority opinion have stated that they should be able to prohibit correctional facility officials from strip-searching people that have been arrested before being admitted to jail because it may help them make sure that the detainee does not have drugs, weapons or other potentially harmful information on them.

Strip-searches on those arrested are not required, but they are now allowed. Those not in favor of the new law have stated that strip-searches on those arrested for minor crimes is unnecessary and violates “individual privacy.”
